Workshop OverviewSNOMED-CT is the most comprehensive clinical terminology covering all medical (primary care, acute/tertiary care), procedures, medicine, nursing, allied health domains. Currently, different terminology/classification systems are used in different health care sectors and clinical domains. Such disparities prevent full semantic interoperability between data collected from different sectors and clinical domains. The decision to adopt SNOMED-CT will remove the need to perform code/terminology mapping and information loss as a result of the mapping procedures. SNOMED-CT has the great potential to facilitate full semantic interoperability of interchanged health data across the entire health care industry.HL7 NZ and Australia are pleased to offer a workshop on SNOMED-CT for the NZ health IT industry and international delegates prior to the IHIC conference. The workshop is being coordinated by Terminology Central with the support of HL7 Australia. These sessions will take the mystery out of SNOMED and focus on practical issues required for implementation and discussion of international experience. There will be two parallel education streams which will be preceded by a presentation from the NZ Ministry of Health on “Now that we have rights to use SNOMED CT in NZ, what will we do to ensure its successful adoption across the sector?” presented by Russell Craig, Team Leader Strategy and Policy, Health Information Strategy & Policy, NZHIS, Ministry of Health. New Zealand, with eight other nations, is a founding member of the newly formed International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation (IHTSDO, also known as SNOMED SDO). Having secured the rights for NZ to use SNOMED CT, the Ministry of Health will now take two steps:
Workshop Options - Concurrent StreamsENTRY LEVEL WorkshopIntroduction to terminology and getting to know SNOMED-CT, along with comparisons of the current terminology and classification systems such as ICD9 and 10AM, Read codes, and LOINC. The sessions will focus on practical issues related to how SCT can be used in health informatics systems. At the end of this workshop you will understand where clinical terminology supports data management and interoperability. You will understand how SCT is constructed and be able to navigate around with confidence and find terms using browser software and and online tools. We will introduce the process of mapping or linking SNOMED to existing terminologies.
